Volnay

VOLNAY, a masculine name, yet full of feminine grace!

The red wines of Volnay stand out for their unmatched finesse and elegance. Brilliant ruby in color, they offer aromas of red berries, violets, and spices. On the palate, their silky, smooth texture makes them an ideal pairing with fine cuts of Charolais beef.

Location

Nestled between two Burgundy icons—Pommard to the north and Meursault to the south—Volnay is a charming winegrowing village that once served as the summer residence of the Dukes of Burgundy. Its intimate atmosphere is shaped by a picturesque old washhouse, narrow lanes, small courtyards, and historic interwoven houses.

Backed by Mont Chaignot, Volnay sits at a slightly elevated position; its vineyards slope down toward the Route Nationale 74 and embrace along the way a quaint 15th-century chapel beside the famous wine road. Thanks to its excellent exposure—sheltered from wind and fog—Volnay is one of the earliest-ripening terroirs on the Côte, often the first to begin harvesting. The soils here, composed of limestone and patches of schist, are mixed with reddish-brown silt.

Volnay, exclusively producing red wines, is distinguished by its natural elegance and signature finesse. The Volnay Premier Cru 2011 is a beautiful example. With a ruby robe, sometimes deep but always radiant, Volnay releases a charming bouquet of violets and roses harmoniously mingling with a basket of red fruits, sometimes joined by subtle spicy notes. But what truly defines it is its exceptionally smooth mouthfeel, delicate texture, and velvety tannins.

Premiers Crus make up a significant portion of the appellation—115 hectares out of the 213 hectares of Volnay vineyards. Among the most notable are Taille Pieds and Clos des Chênes, whose rocky upper slopes produce age-worthy wines. We recommend the Clos des Chênes 2020 from Château de Meursault. Also noteworthy are Les Champans and Les Caillerets, whose red clay soils yield wines that are highly representative of the village’s style.

Volnay-Santenots

The most unique Premiers Crus are those located within the boundaries of Meursault, covering 29 hectares. These wines are labeled Volnay-Santenots when made from Pinot Noir, but retain the Meursault Premier Cru designation if made from Chardonnay. In their red (Volnay) version, these wines are absolutely exceptional—boasting aromatic complexity, depth, and perfect balance that elevate them well beyond the appellation. Some, like Santenots du Milieu, are so remarkable they arguably deserve Grand Cru status. Try the Gauvain cuvée from the Hospices de Beaune to see for yourself.

The charming village of Volnay

It’s well worth a visit! Don’t hesitate to put on comfortable shoes and take a scenic walk up the hill, where you’ll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view—Volnay proudly overlooks its neighbor (and rival), Pommard. After your vineyard hike, find comfort at the cellier volnaysien, where a hearty, traditional Burgundy dish like coq au vin will warm both your heart and soul.
