Pommard

POMMARD, a true star

The name Pommard is known around the world and resonates loudly. It has contributed to the popularity of its red wines, which are among the most sought-after in all of Burgundy.

Location

Located between Beaune and Volnay, in the very heart of Côte de Beaune, Pommard is a charming village with a square church tower and a fine heritage of historic houses—some Romanesque, others showcasing the elegant architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries. A standout example is its 300-year-old château, built in pure Regency style by Vivant Micault, a royal advisor to King Louis XV.

With a delimited area of 337 hectares and 28 climats classified as Premier Cru, spread across both sides of a hillside, Pommard was granted AOC status in 1936. The vineyard landscape is shaped by a hill bisected by a large combe (valley), with limestone-rich soils containing a high proportion of clay. This revered terroir—earthy and powerful—is exclusively dedicated to red wines. These wines, made from Pinot Noir, are deep in color and offer aromas of black fruits, redcurrant, cherry stone, and ripe plum, gradually evolving into more animal and wild notes such as leather, musk, and even game.

Wines from Pommard

Pommard wines are known for their robust structure. Tannic, full-bodied, and firm in their youth, they benefit from ageing, which allows them to mellow and become more rounded. Their solid framework ensures a long life—typically between 5 and 20 years. However, as with any terroir, origin can nuance the profile. The style varies significantly between the two leading Premiers Crus.

Les Rugiens, located mid-slope on the southern side of the hill, produce powerful and assertive wines—especially in the lower section known as Rugiens-Bas.

Les Epenots, found on the lower northern slope and divided between Petits Epenots and Grands Epenots, benefit from favorable ripening conditions sheltered by the walls of several clos. Their wines are notably elegant—such as Le Clos des Epenots from Château de Meursault.

Whether from Rugiens or Epenots, these two climats of Pommard produce wines of great character, possessing the singular nobility of the finest terroirs. They are true contenders for Grand Cru status.

If you have yet to discover the lovely wine village of Pommard, don’t wait any longer. And if you are greedy, you’ll also find excellent chocolates here—crafted from various cacao crus and perfect for pairing with a glass of Pommard wine.
