Gevrey-Chambertin

The Birthplace of a King

The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, located in Côte de Nuits, produces intense, powerful red wines with generous, fleshy texture supported by refined tannins. With extraordinary ageing potential, Gevrey-Chambertin wines are the perfect match for fine gastronomy.

Location

Located at the mouth of the Combe de Lavaux, Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the largest communal appellations in Côte d’Or. Now extensively developed, the village of Gevrey-Chambertin retains many traces of its long winemaking history. Its old château is a fine example.

Originally built for defensive purposes, the château was repurposed in the 13th century by the monks of Cluny to store their harvests. The small oratory of Clos Saint-Jacques—once a wine-related stop on the Way of St. James—the splendid Hôtel Jobert de Chambertin, which reflects the wealth of a former wine merchant of the royal court who, in 1728, acquired a large part of the Clos de Bèze and 60 ouvrées of Chambertin.

He loved this wine so much that he added the name of the famous cru to his own: Jobert de Chambertin. Since 1847, the name Chambertin has been attached to the name of the village of Gevrey.

The village

You cannot truly say you know Burgundy without visiting Gevrey-Chambertin, a village whose exceptional vineyards enjoy worldwide renown. Nature lovers will also appreciate the remarkable Combe Lavaux–Jean Roland nature reserve, named in honor of the Dijon-born naturalist. This important site for Burgundy’s flora is home to more than 500 plant species.

The vineyard

This vast vineyard of 446 hectares—50 of which extend into the commune of Brochon—produces only red wines. In Gevrey-Chambertin, Pinot Noir reaches the pinnacle of excellence, as exemplified by the magnificent Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice 2021 from Château de Marsannay. Granted AOC status in September 1936, this appellation—originally founded in the 7th century by monks from the Abbey of Bèze—has deep roots in the history of Burgundy wine. In addition to its Grand Crus—the “King” Chambertin and its eight “heirs”—Gevrey-Chambertin includes 26 climats classified as Premier Cru (covering 86 hectares).

Among these Premiers Crus, the most noteworthy are located on the protected hillside emerging from the Combe de Lavaux. Clos Saint-Jacques stands out first, with wines so powerful and deep they often rival the Grand Crus. Also notable are Les Cazetiers, such as those from Domaine Dupont Tisserandot, and Lavaux-Saint-Jacques, here represented by Domaine Claire et Stéphane Follin-Arbelet. Other exceptional sites include Aux Combottes, nestled between two Grand Crus—Latricières-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche—as well as Fonteny, adjacent to Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru, and Bel-Air, situated just above Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru.

With marl-clay soils rich in iron, Gevrey-Chambertin produces deeply colored, highly aromatic wines that are powerful, refined, and complex, with a generous and fleshy texture supported by distinguished tannins. These wines have incredible aging potential—especially exemplified in the outstanding 2019 vintage—and are an essential addition to any cellar. A perfect example: Mazis-Chambertin from Domaine Henri Rebourseau.
