Meursault

MEURSAULT, the Supremacy of White Wines

The Meursault appellation is almost entirely dedicated to white wines, offering one of the finest expressions of Chardonnay. Its most renowned climats, classified as Premier Cru, could rightfully aspire to Grand Cru status—these include Meursault Premier Cru Perrières, Genevrières, and Charmes.

Location

Just 8 kilometers south of Beaune as the crow flies, nestled in the very heart of the vineyards to which it is wholly devoted, the elegant and well-to-do village of Meursault, crowned by the soaring spire of its Gothic church tower, reveals several architectural masterpieces.
Notable sites include a beautifully restored 12th-century leper hospital, the town hall with its colorful tiled roof made famous by the cult French film La Grande Vadrouille, and of course, the graceful Château de Meursault with its impressive 14th-century vaulted cellars—among the most stunning in Burgundy.
Each year, on the third Monday of November, the Château hosts the renowned Paulée de Meursault, which brings to a grand close the “Trois Glorieuses” following the Hospices de Beaune wine auction.

This village, with over 400 hectares under vine and AOC status since 1937, ranks among the largest communal appellations of the Côte d’Or.
The Meursault vineyard, which thrives on limestone marl soils, is almost entirely planted with white varieties that best showcase the grandeur of Chardonnay. When the grapes reach full ripeness, they offer a sensation of richness—even though the wine remains dry.
Thanks to their aromatic complexity and generous texture, Meursault wines are approachable when young, but they are also exceptionally age-worthy. Some of its Premier Crus can age for decades. Throughout history, Meursault’s white wines have graced the most prestigious tables worldwide—and thanks to their popularity, more humble ones as well.

Meursault and its wines

Among its 19 Premier Cru climats, the top three are Perrières, Genevrières, and Charmes—such as the outstanding Meursault Perrières Premier Cru 2009 from Domaine Pierre Morey. These remarkable vineyard plots could, without question, be elevated to Grand Cru status.
Other highly esteemed examples include Les Charmes Dessus 2020 from Château de Meursault and Les Genevrières from the Hospices de Beaune.

Meursault occasionally shows its red side—the best example being the Volnay Premier Cru Santenots, which, despite its name, is located in Meursault, not Volnay. A prime example: Volnay Premier Cru Santenots Cuvée Gauvain 2018 from the Hospices de Beaune.

If your journey takes you through Burgundy, don’t miss the chance to stop in Meursault. Its winding streets, peaceful gardens, and stately winemakers’ homes are a true invitation to stroll and explore. And be sure to discover our selection of wines from Volnay, its neighboring appellation renowned for exceptional red wines.
