Gevrey-Chambertin

The Birthplace of a King

The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation in the Côte de Nuits produces intense, powerful wines with a full-bodied, generous texture supported by refined tannins. Gevrey-Chambertin wines have incredible aging potential and pair beautifully with gourmet meals.

Geographic Location

Located at the mouth of the Combe de Lavaux, Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the largest municipal appellations in the Côte d’Or. Although it has expanded considerably over the years, the village of Gevrey-Chambertin retains many reminders of its long history of winemaking. Its old castle is a fine example of this.

This structure, originally built for defense, was repurposed in the 13th century by the monks of Cluny to store their harvests. The small oratory at Clos Saint-Jacques, once a stop for wine lovers on the Way of St. James, the magnificent Hôtel Jobert de Chambertin, which exemplifies the fortune of a former court wine merchant who, in 1728, acquired a large portion of the Clos de Bèze and 60 ouvrées of Chambertin.

He loved this wine so much that he added the name of the famous vineyard to his surname: Jobert de Chambertin. The name Chambertin has been attached to the name of the village of Gevrey since 1847.

The Village

You can’t claim to know Burgundy without having visited Gevrey-Chambertin, whose exceptional vineyards are world-renowned. This village also offers lovers of the great outdoors the remarkable Combe Lavaux-Jean Roland Nature Reserve, named in honor of the Dijon-born naturalist; it is a major site for Burgundian flora, home to more than 500 species of flowers.

THE VINEYARD

This large vineyard, spanning 446 hectares—50 of which extend into the town of Brochon—produces only red wines. In Gevrey-Chambertin, Pinot Noir takes top honors, as evidenced by this magnificent 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice from Château de Marsannay. Established in September 1936, this AOC—which was founded by the monks of Bèze Abbey in the 7th century—has its roots deeply embedded in the entire history of Burgundy wine. In addition to the Grands Crus—the “King” Chambertin and its eight “heirs”—Gevrey-Chambertin boasts 26 climats classified as Premiers Crus (86 ha).

Notable in this category are the estates situated on the large, sheltered hillside at the edge of the Combe de Lavaux, foremost among them Clos Saint-Jacques, whose powerful and complex wines are often on par with the Grands Crus. Also worth noting are the Cazetiers, such as those from Domaine Dupont Tisserandot, and the Lavaux-Saint-Jacques, represented here by Domaine Claire and Stéphane Follin-Arbelet. Also worth noting are Aux Combottes, nestled between two Grand Crus—Latricières-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche—as well as Fonteny, adjacent to the Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru and Bel-Air, just above the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru.

Gevrey-Chambertin, with its marl-clay soils rich in iron, produces wines that are deep in color, highly aromatic, powerful, elegant, and complex, with a full-bodied, generous texture supported by refined tannins. Gevrey-Chambertin wines offer incredible aging potential, further enhanced by the excellent 2019 vintage, making them a must-have for any wine cellar.
